Dr. Maureen Marshall, our district superintendent, has the final authority to decide whether to implement ELT for the schools in the North Middlesex School District. We will have no recourse once this program is enacted, so the time to act is NOW.
Currently, we have two ways to communicate our opposition to ELT to her. These are listed below.
Write a letterThe most important way to communicate your opposition to ELT is for you to write a polite letter to Dr. Marshall, expressing your firm objections to ELT in our schools. Below you will find a sample letter to use as a starting point. Also, please find below a list of other influential people to whom you can send and/or "cc" your letter. Please send your letters as soon as possible.
Sarah McLaughlin is the person who has been designated to review applications. Address letters to Sarah McLaughlin, MA DOE, 350 Main St 5th Fl, Malden, MA 02148; 781-338-3589 or email smclaughlin@doe.mass.edu.
All letters she receives before 8/15/08 will be included in the review, so please send letters ASAP! She says that any parental non-support of this grant should be considered with the grant application.
Circulate a petition
The second way you can help out is to circulate a petition in Pepperell, Townsend and Ashby to get signatures of those people who agree with us that ELT is wrong for our communities. We are working to have a meeting with Dr. Marshall in the last week of August to voice our opposition to ELT and presenting a stack of petitions along with our concerns is certain to get her attention. Details about that meeting will be posted on this site when we have them. We would want many of us to attend the meeting. A copy of the petition is also below. Please return petitions to the following address by August 22nd:
John Anderson
Windy Oaks
34B Elm Street
Pepperell, MA 01463
978-842-4589
Petitions can be dropped off at the above address. Please call ahead to assure that someone is there to receive them, or drop them in the mailbox on Wooltop Drive.
If you can't deliver the petitions, please call and someone will happily come by and pick them up.
Additional efforts that can helpLetting Dr. Marshall know that we oppose ELT is half the battle. Many citizens of our communities are either not aware of ELT or have not considered the possible negative consequences for our children, our families, and our communities. We need to educate our friends and neighbors about ELT, and you can help get the word out. The more people know, the more they will speak out and further spread the word.
Post flyersYou will also find a PAELT flyer in the attachment list below. Please print some out and get them posted around town. Get them on your church bulletin boards, local businesses, providers of kids' activities. But, please remember; get permission first.
Make or get an PAELT T-Shirt
You can use the PAELT Flyer attached below with iron-on transfers for your ink-jet printer, or you can order a PAELT T-Shirt from Zazzle.com. Wear it to meetings with school officials! Proceeds from Zazzle.com will go to cover mailing costs.
